This Week In The Land of Awesome

I, for one, am grateful that the marathon that was the Republican and Democratic Conventions are over simply because it was exhausting to listen to AND explain some things to my sons. They were very engaged and I love that they asked questions and looked at the platforms online and asked about where to read news updates that weren't designed to sway them. I told them if I were honest I probably swing more to the Green Party (based on some Internet quiz I took) and then we had to talk about that and then this past weekend I slept more than I've slept in a month due to all this political parenting. But I wouldn't have it any other way.

Then, on Sunday, Mallory called me from Paris to say that she'd gotten engaged to her longtime boyfriend, Kolin. They planned this trip two years ago and have been looking forward to it. We were texting before her plane took off to France and she told me that without me she "wouldn't have thought a trip like this was possible for someone like me. Thank you for telling me I can do anything and go anywhere." Naturally, I teared up instantly and remembered when I encouraged her to get a passport and she turned it around on me a few years later to urge me to get mine. "Get it, mom. You need to finally travel, too."

Because, uh, AFRICA and ONE Moms. It still makes me giddy to think about this upcoming trip and I'm trying hard to learn some Amharic to be able to speak to the Ethiopians I meet. We're also trying some Ethiopian recipes at home and The Cuban is foodblogging again! That is especially exciting because the pressure means we eat really awesome dishes he comes up with every day. Our trip members has expanded and I'm thrilled to be traveling with this group of women. (One of them is kind of a secret. I promise to tell you which woman has joined our group but I have to keep it quiet until I know I can share. The Cuban is extremely jealous of this one, too.)

If that wasn't enough, this is the week I will be featured, along with Jenny and Erin and Karen and Brené Brown on Katie Couric's new talk show which debuted today. I filmed it while I was in New York to speak at BlogHer and I can honestly say I cannot remember everything I said so it will be a surprise to me to watch it, too! It's unnerving to have a live studio audience PLUS KATIE COURIC sitting right next to you and then the pressure to utter a complete, coherent sentence while maintaining a semblance of decorum. Read: while not drooling on myself.

Katie Couric is a teeny little thing. Very tiny and petite with arms of whatever material they used to build the Terminator. I wanted to put her in my pocket and take her home. She came into the green room to greet us and to say hello before we taped the show and she walked up to me and fixed my dress. "Oh, you'll want to hide this on camera." She noticed that my strapless bra was showing a bit out of my dress and she fixed it. "We call these our turkey cutlets, right, ladies?" and then she giggled.

The point of this isn't that I simply got to meet Pocket Terminator Katie Couric, but that she totally pawed me. BEST. DAY. EVER.

Well. It was up there as one of the best days. Yesterday, while listening to Mallory on the phone tell me about how Kolin proposed to her, might have just edged it out ever so slightly.
